How to Make Trifle
Even though there are a limitless number of variations you can make, learning how to make trifle is quick and painless.
You can use whatever container you wish to hold your trifle but there are special bowls just for trifles, called trifle bowls. They're usually made of glass and have high, straight sides. You can find them large to hold a lot of trifle or small for individual servings.
Typically, trifles contain a rather dry cake, fruit, custard and often an added liquid.
- The cake should typically be dry as it will be absorbing liquids such as fruit juice or liqeours. Sponge cake is a favorite due to its neutral flavor and absorbancy, however, any cake can be used.
- The fruit can be anything you want, but probably the most popular is strawberry.
- Next is the custard. Although custard works well for many trifles, you can choose from whatever flavor of custard or pudding you want, depedning on your trifle.
- Lastly you'll need your liquid, this can again be anything you want, depending on the style of trifle you're making. However, you may have heard of the sherry trifle which uses sherry for the liquid, but if you want, various juices and even water can work just as well.
Here are a couple quick examples of ingredients you can use for your trifle:
- Sponge cake
- Strawberries
- Custard
- Sherry
or you can try something a bit more chocolatey!
- Chocolate cake
- Raspberries
- Custard
- Not needed if cake is moist or you can try some chocolate syrup.
How to make trifle
The amounts used with vary depending on the size of trifle you're making but typically you'll want to have two full sets of layers, meaning after you layer the ingredients once, the bowl will be half full and you'll layer them again.
- Once you have your chosen ingredients you'll want to start by cutting the cake into bite-sized cubes.
- Place a layer of cake on the bottom of the trifle bowl.
- Add a Tbsp. or so if your liquid, you want the cake to absorb it all without swimming in it.
- Add a layer of custard or pudding.
- Add a layer of fruit.
- Repeat all the layers again (don't forget the liquid)
- Garnish the top with a few pieces of fruit and some whipped cream. (Some people like to add a layer of whipped cream in the middle as well.)
