This easy cream cheese frosting recipe calls for the addition of a small amount of cream or milk to make it a bit easier to spread, this is optional of course, however it's recommended to add. You might even want to add a little bit more cream than is in this recipe if making your cream cheese frosting for a light cake to keep from tearing up the cake while applying the frosting.

There are many varieties of cream cheese frosting including lemon and chocolate cream cheese frosting, just add the flavoring you want to get the type of frosting that will go best with your dessert.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 4 c. (about) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 c. unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 Tbsp. cream, milk also works
  • 1-2 tsp vanilla or other flavoring
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. cocoa powder for a chocolate cream cheese frosting

Directions

  1. Cream together cream cheese, salt and butter.
  2. Blend in sugar then add vanilla or other flavoring. Some flavorings are very strong so if you're not using vanilla, you might want to add 1/2 tsp. at a time until you get the flavor you want.
  3. Beat in cocoa powder, if using.
  4. Beat in cream, a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.
